Why hate St. Jude?

So my sister-in-law kindly emails me... but with very, very bad news.

Remember that giant mural of St. Jude on 26th St? Someone had the audacity to paint over it!!! That Jesus-like image (non-christian/catholic folks like me called him Jesus) was a pseudo cultural landmark of Bridgeport/Chinatown. It's been there since I was born at least. Paint me shocked. I swore you had a blog entry about it, but couldn't find it. Anyway, what used to be the Hungry Hound is now a Mexican place...they painted the logo over St. Jude. It's hideous. We can't find our digital camera, otherwise you'd get a pic.

What a travesty. It's not like the perpetrators even replaced St. Jude with something better, like this:

Let's all smoke in memory of St. Jude.
May he live in our hearts and minds forever.

Fuck Colts

Although I did not watch the Superbowl (I didn't even know the time it was on) and went shopping instead with Lady Pun to the Vintage Fashion Expo in Santa Monica (where we each bought beautiful fabulous purses!), I am writing with extreme sadness and regret that Da Beloved Bears had lost. They were a far better team and deserved to win. Not that I really know (or care) but loyalty is a requisite for Chicagoans. So the Colts can go fuck themselves.

Despite our loss, I am still proud of our team and our city. To pay tribute, I present to you fellow Chi-towners Kanye West and Common's Southside Superbowl. I guess no Superbowl Shuffle II this year so this will have to do. SOUTHSIDE!

The Super Bowl Shuffle

You can thank me later.

Dude, I love youtube. It's the best.

Victorious

I don't follow football, but Blu-tooth alerted me that my hometown football team totally creamed the New Orleans Saints by 39-14. Damn. Yeah, yeah... I know the New Orleans Saints were the underdogs and everyone besides Chicagoans were rooting for them because of the tragedy the city had experienced, but... you know, cry me a river. Winners win. It's as simple as that. And can I tell you how we are such awesome winners... and perhaps win the Superbowl this year? I still remember our last Superbowl victory in 1985. I was in fifth grade and EVERYONE in Chicago was Bears crazy. Even I was Bears crazy. So crazy that I had a crush on Jim McMahon (eww!) and also memorized the Superbowl Shuffle. I still remember the lyrics to this day. If you give me a quarter, I will rap it to you. If you give me a dollar, I will rap it and do a little dance too.

In honor of today's win, I present the chorus of this masterpiece to you:
We are the Bears Shufflin' Crew
Shufflin' on down, doin' it for you.
We're so bad we know we're good.
Blowin' your mind like we knew we would.
You know we're just struttin' for fun
Struttin' our stuff for everyone.
We're not here to start no trouble.
We're just here to do the Super Bowl Shuffle.
Very classy shit.

Represent, Part 2

Vida (Chinese Thai American), Guia (Filipina with a full-blooded Chinese grandfather and married to a Chinese man who inexplicably claims Taiwanese heritage) and DYY (Chinese American) proudly celebrated the People's Republic of China's National Day at a boba shop in Chinatown, Chicago.

So what if we initially didn't know why these cute plastic Chinese flags were proliferating around town. I just grabbed them because they were free. After all, that's the Chinese way. Represent!

What I later learned from Yip Yee and the handy internet:

The PRC's National Day was declared at three o'clock on October 1, 1949, in front of 300,000 people during a ceremony in Tiananmen Square. Chairman Mao declared the founding of the People's Republic and waved the first five-star PRC flag.

Don't we look like good, obedient Chinese comrades?
Chairman Mao would be proud.

Gotta represent at home too. After all, home is where the heart is. And, believe me, the Communist Party wants your heart (and your mind and body and soul and loyalty and first born, etc.)

Joe Mak in Chicago!

Joe Mak, Street Magician is debuting at the 11th Annual Chicago Asian American Film Festival today, as I type actually. It started at 5:15 pm midwestern time. I am so extremely bummed that I am not there right now, but I didn't have the time nor funds to go home. Sniffle. Still, I am very excited and hope the Chi-town folks find it funny.

Here's a descirption of our short from FAAIM's program booklet:

Joe Mak: Street Magician

Rebecca Yee | 2005 | 9 min | video | USA
David Blaine ain’t got nothing on “the Mak.” Joe’s magic defies all sense of logic and purpose, as his street performance amazes mostly himself. Catch the magic of Joe Mak!

Congratulations to the JMSM cast and crew!

Green means your horny

Workers dye the Chicago River green as part of the city's annual St. Patrick's day celebrations in Chicago.

Here's a secret: The river is already pretty green.

Happy St. Patrick's Day, Bitches!
