People from Wasilla scare me

Lady Simzie says she's so over Palin. Like an old, wet newspaper. Not me. I'm still amused.

Palin is a wonderful public servant. In this video, she teaches us not to worry about "heavy-handed politics" and criticism as long as we have fun. Keep it real, sister.

Description and video, courtesy of the Huffington Post:

On Thursday, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin appeared in Wasilla in order to pardon a local turkey in anticipation of Thanksgiving. This proved to be a slightly absurd but ultimately unremarkable event. But what came next was positively surreal. After the pardon Palin proceeded to do an interview with a local TV station while the turkeys were being SLAUGHTERED in the background!! Seemingly oblivious to the gruesomeness going on over her shoulder, she carries on talking for over three minutes. Watch the video below to see for yourself. Be warned, it's kind of gruesome.

Valentine's Day

I didn't make any chocolate chip cookies like I had indicated. I tried. But the 99 Cents Only store ran out of Pilsbury Doughboy cookie mix. So oh well.

But for Vday, I still tried the domesticity thing. It's actually not bad and kind of fun if you play house with the right people.

DV8 and I made dinner instead -- Pecan-crusted honey baked salmon, sauteed spinich with garlic, and brown rice simmered in onion soup.

By the way, I must mention that DV8 caught the salmon with his bare hands at a fishing expedition in Canada. It's quite amazing, I know. I suppose he's quite the hunter. If this were prehistoric days, our house would be a cave, we'd wear furry thongs, and it would likely be my job to scale and clean the captured fish for our consumption. Thank god it's modern times and we can hire people to do that for us. It's better that way. I like to do my part to promote the economy.

Speaking of prehistoric times, which usually leads me to think about evolution, here's an article, also fished out by DV8, that describes a newly discovered biological reason for why humans aren't good at monogamy. You should read it for yourself for full comprehension... but, basically, it's all about the battle of the sperm! They're aggressive little fuckers, aren't they? It's good I date stoners.

Chinese Colonel Sanders

Straight from the Tidbits of VICE Magazine: We like the Chinese version of Colonel Sanders because he doesn’t come across as a kind of racist version of Orville Redenbacher. Not that old Chinese guys can’t be racist. They’re just way cuter about it.

My newest addiction

Perhaps from my latest posts you could already tell? Yes, folks, DYY is addicted to celebrity gossip. I have been for many years. Whenever I have any free moments at the grocery store, newstand or airport, I would take those few vital minutes to peruse the pages of US Weekly (my favorite), In Touch, Life & Style, People... any and all of them if time allows.

The addiction is now exacerbated by my recent discovery of celebrity gossip blogs! Ironically, I learned about these countless sites in an article in Bitch Magazine. The article was entitled Web Spite and how gossip columns reduce female stars' worth to their physical appearence and fashion choices, blah blah blah... well, of course, they do! You see, for an addict like me, who understands all the social implications of these one-dimensional images, BUT loves this trash anyway... it's wonderful. It's like that stupid phase, it's the best thing since sliced bread... and it really is.

My favorite is Perez Hilton. He's this young plump gay guy who actually hangs out with many of the younger celebrities and gets to go to all the parties (I learned from one of his posts that he and the other more famous Hilton attended a BPM party that I rsvp'ed to but decided not to go... totally trippy but gross at the same time, right?). His site has the best gossip and is regularly maintained. He also has the funniest (i.e. meanest) comments. Plus, he loathes Tara Reid. As you can tell, he's my biggest pusher. I would be his whore.

I also bookmarked The Superficial , Jordon Is Your Homeboy, and A Socialite's Life, although they're not as good as Perez's. So when I am limited on computer time, I just read Perez's and catch up on the others later.

I know what you're thinking. Fuck you. Don't be judgmental. We all have illnesses.

Asians and the immigration debate

Many have wondered and discussed the role of Asians and Asian Americans on issues regarding immigration policy and reform. Unfortunately, the voices of our community have been widely ignored or subordinated, despite that most, if not all, Asians and Asian Americans in the United States are immigrants, come from immigrant backgrounds, or have close ties with an immigrant community. Additionally, it is a fact that decisions ultimately made in Congress as well as whatever happens on the streets by wacko xenophobic vigilante groups, like the Minute Men, shall undoubtedly have an impact on the Asian community. You may not see many of our faces during protests and rallies, but it's a complex issue that affects us and our families everyday.

The LA Times recently published an article that I thought was a pretty good introduction to the dialouge of Asians and the immigration issue. I also just read a really interesting article in the lastest New Yorker regarding "snakeheads" -- individuals in the Chinese community who make a lucrative career out of illegally smuggling undocumented Chinese natives into the United States. Despite the wretched and inhuman conditions of their transport, the enormous debt they owe, and the risks of detainment and deportation and death, it seems that many of the Chinese are not regretful, even the ones who didn't make it. Rather, they are extremely grateful to the snakeheads.

It makes you remember how fortunate we Americans are.

**Long live Sister Peng, the greatest snakehead of all time! (By the way, she's Fukinese, for my two Fukinese friends out there... I think she kicks ass. She can be your role model!)

Fashion Renegade

Umar Rashid (aka FroHawk Two-Feathers aka Kent Cyclone) made his debut in the LA Times West Magazine for his controversial fashion statement.

I think I prefer "militant chic" over "terrorist chic" though.

Congratulations dude. You're my idol.

No Rolling Stone in China

I don't generally believe in censorship of any kind... but that's because I live in America. Unless it incites imminent physical harm or danger, nothing in America should be censored. Yet I get so annoyed when Americans or American companies go overseas, and are disrespectful of the laws and culture of that particular country.

Rolling Stone magazine entered the Chinese market early this month with a huge splash, including billboard advertisements, a 125,000-copy roll-out and free Rolling Stone hats with each magazine. On Wednesday, regulators said they would not allow it to publish a second issue.

Apparently, Rolling Stone crossed several red lines. More than half the content in the first edition is translated from the U.S. edition, yet it never received formal approval from the government.

It also ignored requirements that the publication's original Chinese name be printed in large type on the cover with its foreign name smaller and less prominent. In its first issue, Rolling Stone splashed its English name across the front in far larger type than its official Chinese title.

"They didn't go through the proper procedure," said Chen Li, director at the Shanghai Press and Publishing Administration. "There will be no future Rolling Stone content in this magazine. There's no such thing as 'Rolling Stone.' "

Haha.

Ask a Mexican

Gustavo Arellano is a columnist for “Ask a Mexican" in the OC Weekly

Why are all the ingenious ideas already taken? I would LOVE to start an "Ask a Chink" column but then folks would discover I'm not being original. Dammit. It looks like so much fun -- Readers would ask Arellano some really fucked up but funny questions about Mexicans and Mexican culture, and he responds in a flippant yet endearing way.

Check out these examples:

Dear Mexican,

What's with the Mexican need to display the Virgin of Guadalupe everywhere? I've seen her in the oddest places, from a sweatshirt to a windshield sticker.

Dear Pocha,

I've seen her painted on murals, woven into fabulous silk shirts worn by Stetson-sporting hombres and — one holy night — in my bowl of guacamole.

Mexican Catholicism is sublime precisely because it doesn't draw a distinction between the sacred and the profane. We can display our saints as comfortably in a cathedral as we do on hubcaps.

Dear Mexican,

Why do you always see Mexicans lying in the grass under a tree…. ¿Por quĂ©?

Dear Pocha,

Mexicans are good public citizens who know that parkland is best used for whittling the afternoon away underneath an oak, a salsa-stained paper plate and an empty six-pack of Tecate tossed to the side.

Dear Mexican,

As an Asian person, would I be considered a gabacho? Or do I fall into the yellow bucket labeled chinito, even though I'm not Chinese?

Dear Chino,

Like Americans assume all Latinos are Mexican, Mexicans think all Asians are chinos — Chinese. When I used to go out with a Vietnamese woman, my aunts would speak highly of mi chinita bonita — my cute little Chinese ruca….

This Mexican is fucken hilarious. I won't bite off of him, but if you have any questions for a Chink, please feel free to ask.

HOT!

Yup, there's my girl Scarlett again... baring it all. I'm not really into Keira Knightley though... she looks too Rhode Island, if you know what I mean. Rachel McAdams, that brunette from Wedding Crashers, backed out at the last minute and Tom Ford oddly took her place.

At the request of DivineStyler

Our Canadian transplant asked that I post this article on my blog. It is about how Bush gets away with all his lies because half of the American population is incapable of acquiring, processing and understanding information. Unfortunately, half of you probably won't get it. Sorry. But DYY does not discriminate. I have pretty pictures on my blog for you folks... just scroll up and down. Enjoy!

Another Jesus Christ Superstar

I like Kanye West for many reasons -- he has phenomenal producing skills, he has good racial politics, and he's from Chi-town. Enough said, bitches.

But I hate it when a rapper takes on the persona of Christ. Nas was at his low when he did it, and this is just another recreation of that, so it's not even like Kanye is original about it.

Does a rapper who takes on the Christ persona really think he suffered so? Or that he's a messenger of God? Or our savior? I guess I just don't get it. Sorry, but it looks sorta stupid.

I hope this was Rolling Stone's idea, and not Kanye's, who I would still like to think is original and innovative. But you know, if Rolling Stones paid me good money, I too might prance around with a plastic crown of thorns and a tattered robe.

I Heart Vince

My co-workers announced at lunch today that Vincent Gallo died. I was surprised, then bummed. The first time I heard of Vincent Gallo was during Thanksgiving weekend when we rented BUFFALO 66, which I thought was excellent. Since then, the movie has popped up in my thoughts from time-to-time.

I emailed the group of folks I saw the movie with and relayed the sad news. Jane responded that she couldn't find any details on the web. Harkim said our friend has a friend who has a friend who parties with Vince, so he'll find out. In the meantime, I searched the web and found Vince's official website, maintained by Vince himself. Dude... Vince is fuckin crazy cool. I had no idea. The shit on his website is brilliant. He has a merchandise section in which he sells his old crappy possessions, and people buy it! I love it.

I began doing more research on him and delightfully discovered that he's funny too. Funny in an arrogant insecure neurotic way, like his character in Buffalo 66. Super irreverant. Quite racist and homophobic... but c'mon... he's a fuckin Italian from Buffalo! You might think that comment's harsh (or racist), but I know Vince would appreciate it. Anyway, I decided I'm going to write him a letter... if he's still alive, that is.

Harkim was on the same tip. He forwarded to us this essay Vince wrote for Dutch Magazine. After I read it, I was hooked.

DYY formally declares herself a fan of Vincent Gallo.

Brown Bunny, anybody?
